Soft vs. Firm Squishies: Which Texture Is Right for You?

Ask ten squishy fans what the "best" squishy is and you'll get ten answers. A lot of that comes down to one thing: soft or firm?
Neither one is better. They're just different. Here's how to figure out which one is your texture.
Soft squishies 🍡
How they feel: Your fingers sink right in. Soft squishies squash easily and often take their time coming back.
You'll probably love soft if you:
- like slow, gentle squeezing
- want something calming to hold while watching a show or listening to music
- enjoy that "melting" feeling when it squashes between your fingers
Good to know: Very soft squishies can pick up dust and lint more easily, and some get a bit sticky over time. A little care goes a long way (see Why Is My Squishy Sticky?).
Firm squishies 🧊
How they feel: Dense and solid. You have to push harder, and they snap back quickly.
You'll probably love firm if you:
- like to squeeze hard
- want something that pushes back
- keep a squishy in your hand while studying or thinking and like steady resistance
- want a squishy that's harder to flatten by accident in a backpack
Medium squishies: the in-between
Can't decide? Medium squishies are a great first pick. They give a bit, but still push back. If you're buying a gift and don't know the person's taste, medium is the safest choice.
Quick comparison
| Soft | Medium | Firm | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squeeze effort | Very little | Some | A lot |
| Comes back | Slowly | Medium | Quickly |
| Best for | Calm, slow squeezing | Everyday use, gifts | Strong grips, focus |
| Watch out for | Dust, stickiness | Not much | Can tire your hand |
Texture is more than soft or firm
Softness is just one part of how a squishy feels. Squishies can also be:
- stretchy: pull it and it gets longer
- slow-rising: slowly puffs back after a squeeze
- bouncy: springs back right away
- jelly-filled: wobbly, see-through feel
- crunchy: with beads inside you can feel
- foam: light and airy
So you might love "soft + slow-rising" or "firm + bouncy." Mix and match until you find your combo.
How to find your texture
- Think about how you squeeze. Gentle and slow, or hard and fast?
- Think about when. Relaxing at home, or fidgeting during homework?
- Try one of each. Many fans end up with a small collection: one soft, one firm, one wildcard.
