What Happens If a Squishy Bursts?

What Happens If a Squishy Bursts?

It happens: one squeeze too many and pop, your squishy splits open. Don't panic. Here's exactly what to do.

Step 1: Stop squeezing and put it down

Set it on a plate, paper towel or plastic bag so the filling doesn't spread.

Step 2: Keep little kids and pets away

Younger siblings and pets are the main concern. Filling can be sticky, messy and not something anyone should eat. Some fillings, especially in fake or unknown squishies, may contain things like water beads, which can expand if swallowed.

Step 3: Wash your hands

Wash with soap and water. If filling is stuck to your skin, wash gently with mild soap. Try not to touch your eyes or mouth until your hands are clean.

Step 4: Clean up

  • Scoop or wipe up as much filling as you can with paper towels.
  • For sticky residue on hard surfaces, use warm soapy water.
  • For fabric or carpet, gently scrape off what you can, then dab with warm soapy water. Don't rub, or you'll push it in deeper.
  • Put the squishy and the filling in a bag and throw it out with household garbage.

Step 5: Know when to call for help

Call the Ontario Poison Centre at 1-844-764-7669 (open 24/7) if:

  • someone swallowed filling
  • filling got in someone's eyes
  • someone has a rash or irritation after touching it

Call 911 right away if someone is choking, having trouble breathing, very drowsy or having a seizure.

Don't try home remedies. Poison Centre staff will tell you exactly what to do for that specific situation.

Can I fix it?

Honestly? No. Tape or glue won't hold for long, and a patched squishy can leak again when you least expect it. Once a squishy bursts, it's time to say goodbye.

Why do squishies burst?

The most common reasons:

  • Wear and tear. The skin gets weaker after lots of squeezing.
  • Sharp things. Nails, pens, keys, zips or pet claws.
  • Heat. Hot cars, direct sun, heaters, or (never do this) the microwave. Safety agencies warn that heated squishies can burst and spill hot filling that can cause serious burns.
  • Fakes. Counterfeit squishies may be made with thinner skins that tear much more easily.

If it burst because it was heated

This is an emergency for the skin. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises:

  1. Put the skin under cool running water for at least 20 minutes
  2. Gently wash off remaining filling with mild soap
  3. Don't use ice
  4. Cover with a clean, non-stick dressing
  5. Get medical care for serious burns or any burn on a young child

How to keep your squishy from bursting

  • Check it often for thin spots or small tears
  • Keep it away from sharp objects in your bag
  • Never heat, microwave or freeze it
  • Don't leave it in a hot car or sunny window
  • Buy genuine squishies from real sellers
